Post Graduate Work Permit
Post-graduation work permits (PGWPs) are open work permits issued to international students upon completion of a Canadian program of study. With a PGWP, holders have the freedom to work for any employer, with no restrictions on the number of hours they can work, and anywhere in Canada.
These permits typically remain valid for a duration ranging from eight months to three years, providing international graduates with an excellent opportunity to gain valuable work experience in Canada. Acquiring work experience in the country significantly enhances one’s prospects of obtaining Canadian permanent residence, as it opens up numerous pathways for immigration.
PGWP quick facts:
- A PGWP will not be issued for a duration longer than the applicant’s duration of study in Canada.
- Generally, the PGWP will be approximately the same duration as the applicant’s period of study, up to a maximum of three years.
- As long as more than 50% of your program of study is conducted via in-person classes, you are eligible for a PGWP equal to the duration of your program of study.
- If you studied part-time or did accelerated studies, the length of your PGWP will be the length of your program of study, if taken full-time.
Who is eligible for a PGWP?
Eligibility for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) requires that the applicant be at least 18 years old and have completed a full-time study program in Canada lasting a minimum of 8 months. This program must have been undertaken at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in one of the specified program types. Application for the work permit must be made within 180 days of completing the study program.
For applicants within Canada, maintaining valid status at the time of application is necessary. If their study permit has expired or is due to expire, they may seek visitor status before applying for the PGWP. However, those who apply for a PGWP before their study permit expires can start working full-time immediately while their application is processed. Alternatively, applicants can apply for a PGWP from overseas.
How long does it take to get a PGWP?
The processing time for a PGWP typically ranges from 80 to 180 days. During this waiting period, applicants are permitted to work in Canada as long as they applied for the PGWP before the expiry date of their student permit.
Applicants have a 180-day window to apply for their PGWP from the date they fulfill all requirements of their study program.
If applicants depart Canada after completing their studies, they can now submit a PGWP application from overseas. Previously, such applications had to be made exclusively from within Canada. However, if applying from outside Canada, additional documentation may be required depending on the visa office processing the application.
