Canadian Permanent Resident Card

New permanent residents don’t need to apply for a permanent resident card (PR card). We will send one to you when you immigrate to Canada if you tell us your Canadian mailing address. You have 180 days after immigrating to send it to us. If we don’t get it in time, then you have to apply for your card. There is a $50 processing fee for PR card applications.

Eligibility

To be eligible for a PR card, you must be a permanent resident and submit your application while in Canada. If your PR card isn’t ready before you leave Canada or if you are outside Canada without a valid PR card, you will need to apply for a permanent resident travel document (PRTD). Once you return to Canada, you can then apply for a PR card. You should apply for a PR card if your current card has expired or will expire within nine months, if it has been lost, stolen, or destroyed, if you didn’t receive your card within 180 days of immigrating, or if you need to update your card due to a legal name change, citizenship change, gender designation change, or to correct your date of birth. To maintain your permanent resident status, you must have resided in Canada for at least 730 days in the past five years, though these days do not need to be consecutive and some time spent abroad may count towards this requirement.
