Caregiver Pathways

Home Child Care Provider and Home Support Worker Pilots were introduced on June 18, 2019.

The Home Child Care Provider Pilot and Home Support Worker Pilot have replaced the Caring for Children and Caring for People with High Medical Needs pilots. These new programs offer eligible caregivers a pathway to permanent residence upon accumulating two years of Canadian work experience.

 

Caregivers with work experience in NOC 4411 (excluding foster parents) will qualify for permanent residence through the Home Child Care Provider Pilot.

 

Those with work experience in NOC 4412 (excluding housekeepers) will be eligible for permanent residence through the Home Support Worker Pilot.

 

Both the Home Child Care Provider Pilot and Home Support Worker Pilot will exclusively grant work permits to caregivers who possess a job offer in Canada and meet the following criteria:

  • Language test results indicating a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) of 5.
  • Completion of one year of Canadian post-secondary education or its equivalent obtained abroad.
  • Admissible to Canada.

Each program will accept a maximum of 2,750 primary applicants annually, resulting in a combined total of 5,500 primary applicants per year.

 

Additionally, the pilots offer:

  • Occupation-specific work permits tailored for caregivers, enabling swift job changes if required.
  • Open work permits for spouses/common-law partners and study permits for dependent children, facilitating the caregiver's family to accompany them to Canada.
  • Employers recruiting caregivers from abroad will no longer require a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).
